Shawn Dorman is Associate Editor of the Foreign Service Journal and runs the book program for the American Foreign Service Association. She has written extensively on issues related to the diplomatic career. A former U.S. Foreign Service officer, she has served in Kyrgyzstan, Indonesia and Russia, and in the State Department Operations Center in Washington, D.C. She lives in Baltimore, Maryland.

Well-organized view inside the embassy

One of the strengths of this book is that it relates three facets into the life of a diplomat: the job itself, a day in the life, and "war stories." Of all the career resources I've seen this is the first one that broke a career into this logical structure. The only piece is missing is the all-important family piece, but that is well-covered in the companion book "Realities of Foreign Service Life" by Patricia Linderman.

Dorman's book describes each role in the embassy as written by the person in that role, starting at foreign national all the way to ambassador. The day in the life shares what a person in a specific function does that day. You wonder if those days are really that eventful, and seemingly they are. The "war stories" section, for lack of better name, are exciting and are full of high adventure overseas. "Diplomats do it unarmed" might be the corresponding bumper sticker.

This book's candid portrayal reinforces the need for the prospective diplomat (and their family) to know exactly what they are getting into. This book provides that insight, warts and all. Don't rely on the DoS's online interest survey or website to provide an objective viewpoint; if you're gonna buy that pricey subscription to "The Economist" you want to be sure this is what you want to do!

Fortunately this book is also current in that it somewhat reflects the post-9/11 world. However, with the Secretary Rice's January 2006 announcement of a strategic restructuring of the State Department, this book may need a second edition.

Excellent book for apprecitating the Foreign Service

This book is a series of stories, diaries and descriptions of the many activities taking place by our Foreign Service workers around the globe. I'm not sure how much value this book would have for people that are already working in the Foreign Service, but for those of us who aren't (but aspire to!) this gives a great feel for what actually happens at U.S. Embassies and consulates around the world. I would absolutely, and highly, recommend this book as a good starting point for someone interested in the Foreign Service.

Know what the format is before you buy it

Instead of discussing how a typical embassy is organized, what role each of the officers plays in the organization, how they are assigned, chosen, rated, the book begins with two-page vignettes of people holding different positions in different embassies. You don't really get a good idea of how the embassy is run, just the duties of the PAO, the Consul, the Environmental Officer, etc. Also, the book is clearly a meant as promotional material for the State Department, glossing over current problems with visas, unstable regimes, unfair trade practices, etc.

The only real laugh I got was a section about a State Department Environmental Officer discussing "environmental issues to often skeptical audiences." Yeah, like trying to tell natives in Greenland that global warming is real and they need to get with the program by taking those fur coats off.

A review of the literature is included, presenting the treatment parameters of different studies and their results. 6. Hair removal. This chapter starts with a description of the hair follicle cycle, hair types and important structures for treatment. Treatment strategies are emphasized and detailed, starting from choosing the right parameters to post-treatment recommendations. A literature review is presented regarding treatment parameters and results according to different authors. 7. Vascular lesions treatment. This chapter describes the types of vascular lesions that can benefit from IPL treatment. The treatment protocol is emphasized and all the steps for performing this application are described in detail. A literature review is presented and different results are compared regarding treatment parameters. 8. Complications. It is inevitable that any medical treatment can end with complications. The possible complications of the most common IPL applications (skin rejuvenation, hair removal, pigmented and vascular lesion treatment) are detailed. The way to avoid them and how to handle them is also described. At the end of each chapter, there is a section on the practical points highlighting the most important points of the chapter. The best IPL book by far

My wife and I have been working with Lasers and IPL technologies for the last ten years. And in that time we have read a few books on the subject, most of which ramble on way too much or have very slanted views towards a particular technology.

Well - this book rocked my world!

When it first arrived in the post I was a bit taken back by how thin it was. Its a real light weight in comparison to most books on the subject and my first thoughts were that I had probably just waisted my money. But no, this turned out to be the most useful book on IPL I have ever read.

Firstly the writers stick to the point and don't ramble on. The layout of information allows your mind to absorb it in a logical fashion so the information retains in your mind without having to read it two or three times.

The photos are relevant to the information presented around them but the most useful thing about this book, that sets it above all the rest was the use of Results Tables. Basically charts showing results from numerous IPL physicians, what setting they had used, what results they got, different treatment intervals, different skin types etc etc.

These were fantastic and made it easy to compare differing results others had had with different situations and allowed me as the reader to make some of my own assessments as to what settings and techniques I might try for the future and benefit of my own patients.

And this has to be the most enjoyable technical book I have ever read.

A Fun Way to Learn to Read

Researchers constantly find that reading to children is valuable in a variety of ways, not least of which are instilling a love of reading and improved reading skills. With better parent-child bonding from reading, your child will also be more emotionally secure and able to relate better to others. Intellectual performance will expand as well. Spending time together watching television fails as a substitute.

To help other parents apply this advice, as a parent of four I consulted an expert, our youngest child, and asked her to share with me her favorite books that were read to her as a young child. Marvin K. Mooney, Will You Please Go Now! was one of her picks.

Marvin K. Mooney is an excellent choice of a beginning reader after your child has read about 20 books and is ready for something just a little more challenging. The reason I say that is because there are a number of Dr. Seuss's imaginary creatures and inventions in here, so the illustrations don't totally tell you what the words are. For example, you will see a Ga-Zoom, a Bumble-Boat, a Zumble-Zay, and a Crunk-Car. These are, by the way, the most witty and imaginative illustrations as well.

The fun of the story relates to an impatient adult (displayed by an arm and a hand wearing a watch) who wants Marvin K. Mooney to go. Marvin just listens until the end, when he goes. It isn't clear if Marvin K. Mooney is the child of the hand or the child's friend whose parent wants him to leave. It doesn't really matter. I lean towards the latter explanation. But we all know how adults like to say the whole name of a child to let them know the adult is very serious.

Yet, the book isn't serious at all in any other way. The suggestions for leaving are very funny, and take things that could otherwise be scary and make them humorous (like leaving by taking a ride on a lion's tail).

In typical Dr. Seuss fashion, the story is displayed in a rhyme. Like a good beginning reader, there is a lot of repetition to help the young person. "The time has come. The time is now. Just go. Go. GO! I don't care how." The new sentences usually just replace one or two words. The illustrations encourage the child to keep moving ahead by keeping the mood light as she or he struggles with soon-to-be familiar words. Using the imaginative words is good, too, so that a child can learn to recognize new things.

Obviously, you will want to read this book along with your youngster until he or she gets a command of it. You can start at the beginning, and ask you youngster to read with you as soon as the book is memorized. Then, gradually, you can let your youngster take the lead. If the young person falters a bit, you can provide hints.
