One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer, by Nathaniel C. Fick

If the Marines are “the few, the proud,” Recon Marines are the fewest and the proudest. Nathaniel Fick’s career begins with a hellish summer at Quantico, after his junior year at Dartmouth. He leads a platoon in Afghanistan just after 9/11 and advances to the pinnacle—Recon— two years later, on the eve of war with Iraq. His vast skill set puts him in front of the front lines, leading twenty-two Marines into the deadliest conflict since Vietnam. He vows to bring all his men home safely, and to do so he’ll need more than his top-flight education. Fick unveils the process that makes Marine officers such legendary leaders and shares his hard-won insights into the differences between military ideals and military practice, which can mock those ideals.

In this deeply thoughtful account of what it’s like to fight on today’s front lines, Fick reveals the crushing pressure on young leaders in combat. Split-second decisions might have national consequences or horrible immediate repercussions, but hesitation isn’t an option. One Bullet Away never shrinks from blunt truths, but ultimately it is an inspiring account of mastering the art of war.

From Publishers Weekly
The global war on terrorism has spawned some excellent combat narratives—mostly by journalists. Warriors, like Marine Corps officer Fick, bring a different and essential perspective to the story. A classics major at Dartmouth, Fick joined the Marines in 1998 because he "wanted to go on a great adventure... to do something so hard that no one could ever talk shit to me." Thus begins his odyssey through the grueling regimen of Marine training and wartime deployments—an odyssey that he recounts in vivid detail in this candid and fast-paced memoir. Fick was first deployed to Afghanistan, where he saw little combat, but his Operation [Iraqi] Freedom unit, the elite 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, helped spearhead the invasion of Iraq and "battled through every town on Highway 7" from Nasiriyah to al Kut. (Rolling Stone writer Evan Wright's provocative Generation Kill is based on his travels with Fick's unit.) Like the best combat memoirs, Fick's focuses on the men doing the fighting and avoids hyperbole and sensationalism. He does not shrink from the truth—however personal or unpleasant. "I was aware enough," he admits after a firefight, "to be concerned that I was starting to enjoy it."

From Booklist
Fick signed up for the Marine Corps Officer Candidates School after receiving a B.A. from Dartmouth in 1999 because he wanted a challenge. He got one. He made it through the school and eventually into the First Recon Battalion (the elite of the elite), and he served in Afghanistan and Iraq before leaving the corps as a captain. The classics major proceeds in classic form, covering his training succinctly but thoroughly and his field experience in well-narrated detail, and concluding with a short epilogue. One of the corps' attractions for him was the chance for leadership in fighting. He quickly learned that the trust between platoon and leader can make the difference between life and death for both, and he builds his combat descriptions around that principle. One Bullet Away can be recommended to anyone wanting a frontline description of this country's recent combat theaters and to anyone seeking a personal account of the contemporary Marine Corps. Marines are people, and Captain Fick puts proof of it on paper. Frieda Murray

A great officer account of modern warfare!
By Joe Creason
I listened to the 16.5 hour long unabridged edition of this book narrated by Andy Paris. The last paragraph of this review focuses on that production specifically.

4 stars: A straight-forward account of Marine combat in Afghanistan and Iraq from the POV of a Jr Officer.

Nate Fick was a main character portrayed in HBO’s 2008 miniseries GENERATION KILL (based on Evan Wright’s 2004 memoir of the same name). This memoir was written before the miniseries but after Wright's account, in 2005. It covers his introduction into the Marine Corps, deployment to Afghanistan, subsequent training as a Recon Marine and then his role as an Lt in the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Fick is a capable writer and his story doesn’t simply cover the same ground covered in GK. You learn that he scored expert on the rifle range, was a weapons platoon commander, underwent varying rigorous courses of special forces-esque training and you also get a lot more information on lesser known members of the Recon Platoon he leads into Iraq. For example, Gunny Wynn is a much more significant character in the last half of Fick’s account due to his role in the unit organization.

Fick is able to portray the demand and stress associated with small unit leadership and his boot camp and advanced training segments are more interesting than other accounts I’ve read, but this account is a more straight-forward, almost sterile one. It isn’t devoid of opinions or personal reflection, but that’s not the focus of his account. This is not necessarily a drawback, but it makes for a less riveting combat account when Fick finds himself in the thick of the fighting.

Instead of a blow-by-blow combat account, we’re given one about leading competent men into modern warfare which, despite the subpar decision making skills of some of his superiors, sees him and his men through two different stints in combat without any KIAs.

However this does make the book less compelling ultimately, and I also felt that his training portion of the memoir, though better than others was still a bit bloated and could have been a bit shorter.

But these cons are drastically outweighed by the pros of Fick’s account, making it stand on it’s own as a story of the Wars on Terror, apart from Wright’s and later the miniseries. I also feel it is one of the best officer accounts published about this conflict, hence my scoring it 4/5 stars.

In terms of recommendations I'd say check out Wright’s book, though it is from the perspective of an embedded journalist. Also check out the miniseries because it is brilliantly made, acted and produced by the people behind THE WIRE, too.

Concerning modern combat memoir recommendations: the best one so far is still HOUSE TO HOUSE by David Bellavia and the best officer account is LIONS OF KANDAHAR. There are many accounts out there and I have a listmania ranking them if you’re interested.

As for the audiobook: I got a copy of the unabridged audiobook on tape read by Andy Paris. Paris reads the book well, if a bit dry but he changes up his voice acting for different characters though he sticks to the same tempo throughout all the different settings. The abridged version is read by Fick himself but I haven’t listened to it and read somewhere that Fick himself wasn’t happy with how the abridged book was edited.

One Bullet Away
By firemnmike
This is an amazing book highlighting the difficult road of going from ordinary college graduate to the super ordinary life of a marine officer, and then to war. This book was suggested to me by my son who has completed college, Officer Candidate School, The Basic School and is currently in MOS tank school for United States Marines. His statement to me was "this is remarkably accurate ". I found the book interesting, scary, and enhancing my already high regard for the marines and especially those that choose to lead as officers. This book also serves to help us focus on a difficult part of our country history, specifically Iraq and Afghanistan invasions. And the reintroduction of our soldiers into society. I recommend this book and say to captain Fick, Semper Fidelis.

Fascinating insight into both the achievements and limits of military training.
By WiltDurkey
One thing that has always intrigued me is the US/British/Western(?) hierarchy between grunts, noncoms and officers. This has been the key to successful small unit tactics and flexibility. Many, many, armies have never quite gotten the hang of it and operate with essentially troopers and officers. The Soviet-derived model is officer heavy with not much importance attached to noncoms. Yet, in practice, a truly flexible and adaptable military, capable of tactical innovation, needs all 3.

Noncoms (sergeants and up, pardon me if I mess this up) are extremely key to making things work. But their "making", to echo the books' title is pretty clear. They come up from the ranks and although they command the regular soldiers they come from the same background, only they have years of experience and they are the cream of the crop. Their role is key, but this book does not cover it much.

Every army also needs officers, but the difference is that lieutenants are expected to make life and death decisions for troopers who are barely any younger than they are and who often have more combat experience. Often, their primary qualification is being more educated, which is not necessarily relevant on the battlefield. As they get older and more experienced, they, hopefully (but not always as this book also shows) become more qualified to lead troops.

Mr. Fick's book is an extremely interesting look at how the USMC trains these junior officers. In his case, due to his dedication and humility he comes out ready to take on this important responsibility. If you read through the lines, some of his fellow officers are not as good, even if the majority of officers perform admirably. Incompetent and glory seeking leaders have been the bane of the military for millennia, especially when wars are preceded by long periods of peace. Still, the overall impression I got was that the USMC is trying (no, I did not say "doing its best") to weed out the useless. Perhaps more in training than once they have graduated, which is similar to what we see in other professions, like doctors.

He mentions in passing a reason why his First Recon unit in Iraq had _some_ less than stellar leaders. Recon marines were expected to operate at the noncom/trooper level in the field. As a result, most of the officers were desk bound and might have found themselves out of their depth in the front lines.

If you are interested by the military give it a read. It is most definitely nuanced and does not "rah rah" the problems raised by the use of deadly force. Despite a deep respect for the military way of life.

One caveat: those solely interested in Iraq/Afghanistan coverage will find that it is not the main subject here. Lt. Fick only covers two fairly short deployments. On the other hand, it dovetails nicely and covers the same unit and mission as Generation Kill, albeit in a less critical fashion.

The New Case for Gold, by James Rickards

**USA Today bestseller and Wall Street Journal business bestseller**

They say John Maynard Keynes called gold a "barbarous relic."
They say there isn’t enough gold to support finance and commerce.
They say the gold supply can’t increase fast enough to support world growth.

They’re wrong.

In this bold manifesto, bestselling author and economic commentator James Rickards steps forward to defend gold—as both an irreplaceable store of wealth and a standard for currency.

Global political instability and market volatility are on the rise. Gold, always a prudent asset to own, has become the single most important wealth preservation tool for banks and individuals alike. Rickards draws on historical case studies, monetary theory, and personal experience as an investor to argue that:

• The next financial collapse will be exponentially bigger than the panic of 2008.
• The time will come, sooner rather than later, when there will be panic buying and only central banks, hedge funds, and other big players will be able to buy any gold at all.
• It’s not too late to prepare ourselves as a nation: there’s always enough gold for a gold standard if we specify a stable, nondeflationary price.

Providing clear instructions on how much gold to buy and where to store it, the short, provocative argument in this book will change the way you look at this “barbarous relic” forever.

Review
“The New Case for Gold reminds us that wayward policies bring about a search for money that is good as gold. What better than gold itself?”
—Wall Street Journal

“This excellent book proves that, contrary to the propaganda of fiat currency apologists, gold is real money. Rickards makes a compelling case for why those looking for a way to protect themselves and their families from economic chaos created by central bankers should consider gold.”
—Ron Paul, former Congressman and Presidential candidate

“In his latest book, James Rickards gifts us once again with his clarity of prose, depth of experience and sound analysis. The New Case for Gold discards tired and politically driven criticisms of gold, instead offering an illuminating, original argument for gold as a critical contender in today's money games. The most important book on gold yet.”
—Nomi Prins, author of All The Presidents’ Bankers

“We can’t trust the Federal Reserve to do the honest work that Jim Rickards has done in writing this book. When the monetary system finally fails, there will be a flight to the only money that’s left in the system—and that will be gold. Essential reading.”
—David A. Stockman, Former OMB Director and author ofThe Great Deformation

“[Rickards] present[s] compelling evidence that many of the world’s leading monetary authorities implicitly, at least, treat gold as — quite possibly in the future, the key — money.”
—Forbes

Awesome book that is a must read! Worth more than its weight in gold.
By Ajay Singh
I read Currency Wars, another book written by the author, a while ago. Even though I was impressed by the concept the author presented in that book, I was turned off by his writing style. In that book, the author spent chapters and chapters bragging about himself telling us how great and important he was, perhaps to establish credibility. The reader had to sift through the fluff to get to the gems of wisdom. As you probably already know, that book made the author famous and currency wars is now a widely understood and often quoted concept in mainstream media.

This book is very different in that regard. It is concise, to the point, mostly factual and the arguments that the author presents are based on sound economic principles. There is very minimal bragging by the author so hardly any fluff. I was able to finish the book within a weekend reading off an on during the day. I am utterly impressed by the author. He is not only knowledgeable but also a genius who can use his knowledge to visualize the future. His arguments are extremely sound. It is amazing how he explains complex economic concepts in simple language for the regular reader. Most readers will not even realize that he is using Masters or PHD level economic concepts to explain what is happening and what will happen. I have a master's in economics from a top school in the nation so I understand the concepts he is using to arrive at certain conclusions.

Another reason I was impressed by this great man is his acknowledgement that he may be wrong. That is the mark of a wise and experienced person because you really never know what will happen in the future. He presents various scenarios on what will unfold in the future without making predictions with certainty. He only suggests that you put 10% of your investible assets in gold. Why? Because he says that even if he is wrong, you will lose minimal amount of money.

Even though I have more or less come to the same conclusions as the author and believe that what he is saying is probably right, it is possible that the future may unfold differently. Regardless, read this book! It is worth your time and money.

Mr. James Rickards, has done an amazing job this time!

IT was the expression of love, of lust
By daveyd
It's just an old lonely metal. For millennia IT had dominion over the rise and fall of empires, a frequent arbiter between wars' winners and losers. IT was the expression of love, of lust, between lovers, between kings and queens, and is the feared adversary among warriors in conquest.
"Gold is a barbarous relic." "Neanderthal", antediluvian" Gold has no yield..no intrinsic value...not enough gold in the world to support finance...caused the Great Depression.
But wait.
Gold has no maturity risk. Gold has no commodity risk. Gold has no issuer risk. Gold is atomic element number 79 and will not degrade. Gold is physical and not digitally exposed. Gold movements are not subject to government edicts. Gold is a store of value.
In the days of Empire, Rome used mostly gold and silver for money until corruption of the elements became anathema to public acceptance.
In the early twenties the German Weimar Republic ignored gold in its currency expansion as the mark soon became hyperinflated.
In 1931 "The Great Betrayal" caused a wave of panic as the Bank of England defaulted on its obligatory conversion of sterling to gold.
In centuries past China saw the fall of an empire as a copper shortage was reflected in coins with iron substitutes.
The expensive American War of Independence was reflected in gold and silver coins as values declined to zero in just two years because of government currency intervention.
Is gold held by individual citizens at risk of confiscation as happened in 1933 by legislative fiat of the Roosevelt Administration? The author is equivocal on this issue but his words on pages 138 and 139 are worthy of consideration.
In the author's Conclusion he writes "my models on systemic risk in capital markets point toward dire events, including the collapse of the international monetary system..."
Are we to ignore the warnings of one who is an advisor on international economics to the Department of Defense and the U.S. intelligence community?

Makes the case that everyone needs to look closely at gold
By David S. Hirschman
Rickards does a great job debunking the usual objections to gold. He also reveals the fascinating story of how in 1934 the U.S. government apparently seized over 8,000 tons of gold from the Fed and gave it to the U.S. Treasury, leaving behind "gold certificates" that are still on the Fed's balance sheet to this day. He hypothesizes that this debt of gold is the reason why the Treasury stopped selling gold in 1980.

Why won't the U.S. government permit an audit of the supposed 8,000 tons? Rickards maintains that the gold is "safe and sound" and offers a novel excuse for the refusal to audit: allowing an audit would imply that gold is important. "By refusing to do an audit, the government maintains the pretense that gold is trivial." That sounds implausible to me, and I continue to believe that the simplest explanation is most likely to be true: the gold either isn't physically there in the vaults, or if it is there has been leased to bullion banks that have in turn loaned out each ounce a hundred times over and are unlikely to be able to return it to the Treasury.

Rickards says gold is going to go to at least $10,000, and worries that conventional brokerage and bank accounts are vulnerable to Putin's team of hackers, but then strangely recommends only a 10% allocation to gold. What are we supposed to do with the other 90% of our savings? He is vague on that point. He recommends fine-art and land, but it seems to me that these are not only unsuitable for average savers, but occupy the same bubble territory as equities and bonds. Would anyone argue that stocks offer a potential 8x upside at this point with little downside as gold does? Rickards also says that he recommends "certain hedge funds and alternative investments …" but offers no details.

The book is not a "how to" guide that offers clear step-by-step instructions for acquiring gold. Physical Gold Fund (where Rickards is an adviser) and Sprott are mentioned briefly, as are different vaulting companies. But no details are provided that would help people new to gold get started. The easiest and most economical way to save in gold - the BitGold subsidiary of GoldMoney - is not mentioned, although in Rickards' defense that service is only a year old.

In spite of these deficits, though, the book offers a great deal of useful information about gold and definitely succeeds in making the case that everyone should be looking very closely at gold.

The Title says it all
By Richgirl5
Patsy has a way of writing very clearly and in a no-nonsense manner. There is no guessing what she is "trying" to get across. Prayer is something that I have studied much and practiced personally and her book For Such a Time as This has gently corrected me as well as put some things in their proper order that I hadn't realized before.

Honestly, I believe that Christians need to take their role of prayer seriously (and in joy) and this book will help them along that course in understanding the role of the pray-er as well as comprehending the anointing of God on various people in order to accomplish their given task. Definitely a must read.

I owe an apology to Pres. Bush
By kal
After reading this book I realized I owed President Bush an apology. I was happy when he was elected and thought he could handle it from there. I didn't realize the undergirding of prayer that was necessary. Those eight years could have been so different if people had prayed more and talked less. An absolute must read for anyone who prays or just wants to understand leaders and those in authority.

Unix Philosophy, by Mike Gancarz

* Deals with powerful concepts in a simple way * Highlights important characteristics of Operating systems and other abstract entities in a new way * Explores the tenets of the UNIX operating system philosophy

Unlike so many books that focus on how to use UNIX, The UNIX Philosophy concentrates on answering the questions: `Why use UNIX in the first place?'. Readers will discover the rationale and reasons for such concepts as file system organization, user interface and other system characteristics. In an informative, non-technical fashion, The UNIX Philosophy explores the general principles for applying the UNIX philosophy to software development. This book describes complex software design principles and addresses the importance of small programs, code and data portability, early prototyping, and open user interfaces. The UNIX Philosophy is a book to be read before tackling the highly technical texts on UNIX internals and programming. Written for both the computer layperson and the experienced programmer, this book explores the tenets of the UNIX operating system in detail, dealing with powerful concepts in a comprehensive, straightforward manner.

'It's a pleasant read-it's short and non-technical, focussing on ideology.' - Mactech

From the Publisher
Written for both the computer layperson and the experienced programmer, this book explores the tenets of the UNIX operating system in detail, dealing with powerful concepts in a comprehensive, straightforward manner.

About the Author
Mike Gancarz is an applications and programming consultant in Atlanta, Georgia. Using Linux, Unix, and Java tools, his team develops award-winning imaging solutions for the financial services industry. An expert in Unix application design, Mike has been an advocate of the Unix approach for more than twenty years. A great book for everyone from beginners to 25-year veterans
By Patrick G Salsbury
When I first ran across this book, I thought it looked interesting, but I had a bunch of other books, so I put it aside. Weeks later, back in the bookstore, I noticed it was gone, and was mad at myself for not getting it. Weeks after that, I refound it, and while thrilled, once again rationalized myself into not buying it.
I repeated this cycle of frustration/elation every few weeks over the next few months, as I lost and then re-found the book when they rearranged the shelves. After about 3 or 4 iterations, I finally bought it out of frustration. :-)
To my surprise, it didn't get lost in the piles of "to read" books. It was a fairly quick (and excellent) read. I have recommended it dozens of times to friends and co-workers. From those who are literally just starting out in Unix, to those who have been Unix system administrators for 15-20 years.
Gancarz writes on a multitude of levels, and his style translates well no matter where you are on the Unix spectrum of experience. For people who are just beginning, he says "Ok, so you're a newbie... Here's how we all think, and how we all code. If you understand our frame of reference, all of this will make much more sense."
For those who are seasoned, he says "Ok, so you're a hot-shot veteran with 20 years of coding and sysadmin under your belt... Here are some reminders and pointers on how we all think, and how we all code. If you make sure to follow the same basic tenets, you can be assured that your code will interoperate with everyone else's, and will withstand the test of time."
This is not a book about how to code. This is a book about *how to think* about coding, and operating system design in general. He talks a lot about the portability of data over systems and over time, and how good programs should work well *with each other*, rather than being designed to work with a human. (Compare the user interface of 'grep' to that of Microsoft PowerPoint. One is designed to interface well with thousands of programs, and one is designed to interface well with thousands of humans, but only a few programs. You can't script PowerPoint. You can't include it inside your own programs. You can't call it up from a cron job at 3am to process data for you. It's designed under a different philosophy.)
Just Chapter 4, "The Portability Priority", is worth the price of the book, alone. It succinctly explains why you should choose data portability over efficiency and speed, and also why you shouldn't bother going back to rewrite your old scripts in C or Assembly to eke out that last smidge of speed. (The new computers coming out next year/month/week are going to be 10/100/1000x faster, and so will your code!) And he sings the praises of flat ASCII files for data stores that can be edited on any old text editors, read by all sorts of programs and different operating systems, etc.
By contrast, MS PowerPoint doesn't even interoperate well with other versions of *itself* from past years, and will almost certainly not be able to read files generated with the version that comes out 3-5 years from now.
Two thumbs up. This book is fantastic. And actually, it's been just over 2 years for me, so I think I'm about due for a re-read... :-)

If you have used or ever plan to use Unix, read this book.
By twig@advancenet.net
I've used Unix (and variants thereof) for seven years. I've read hundreds of books about Unix, from systems design to advanced X11 programming. This book provides the fundamentals to understanding Unix on all levels.
The Unix Philosophy has made me appreciate Unix like never before; it's totally changed my ideas about programming, program interoperability, and human-computer interaction. You will want to read this book from cover to cover over and over. You'll find yourself using this book as a reference, even though it's not one. The Unix Philosophy is well written, interesting, and insightful.
Read this book. :)

Every SW-designer should read this book every second year
By Tom O Bjorkholm
This is a wonderful little book that every software designer should ready every second year. The book stresses the issues that we know, but all too often forget: small is beautiful, every program should do one thing well, use leverage, build prototypes, ...
The book also has the classical and wonderful story about the three systems of man. The first system is build by man, he has no time to do it "right". It is a "lean, mean computing machine". The success of the first system leads to the second. The second system is built by experts, the design is by a committee, and the result is a fat and slow system. The third system is built by people who have bean "burned" by the second system. Read the complete great story in the book.
For a user of UNIX or a designer of programs in the UNIX environment the book explains the UNIX design philosophy. This is what could be expected. However, software designers of all systems will benefit from reading the book. The UNIX philosophy is applicable and beneficiary to all software systems, regardless of the operating system used.

Skips too many steps
By A Customer
As a university professor, I chose this book for a graduate course because it seemed to cover the same topics that I wanted to cover.
Unfortunately, after using it for a semester, I've found that the book always skips the key steps in a derivation. Often, it is only evident to the reader that steps have been skipped from the cryptic language used by the authors: "Using equilibrium and compatibility, the following expression results". Very important information is left out.
The book is so short on detail that it would be better if the authors simply published a stack of formulas.

Crappy Quality
By Robert T. Meyers
I just got this book in the mail and am really disappointed in its quality. For $130 I was expecting a good quality binding and pages. I bought it new from amazon and I can barely open the pages because they are warped so badly. The binding is so fragile I am afraid all the pages will pop out of it if I open it all the way.

Prentice Hall - you guys should be ashamed of yourselves.

A gift edition of Mitch Finley's collection of true stories of miracles granted and prayers answered.
This book is about belief in the help of the saints. It is about recovering a wider sense of the community of faith, one that includes devotion to saints as heavenly intercessors with God.
Beginning with a brief explanation of the communion of saints, we are then introduced to St. Anthony of Padua and St. Jude and given a history of how devotion to these two saints became popular in the U.S.
St. Jude, the patron of lost causes, and St. Anthony of Padua, the finder of lost objects, are two saints who have attracted popular devotion and who have become fixtures in the pantheon of Catholic saints. This book features a selection of real-life stories garnered from people whose prayers to St. Anthony of Padua and St. Jude have been answered.
