Tools for understanding a wide range of biological systems

This book is aimed at undergraduate physics students who want to construct quantitative, predictive models of biological systems. The book is not a general introduction to biology - plenty of other books do that job. This book is not really even an introduction to biological physics. (Nelson did that in his earlier book, Biological Physics: Energy, Information, Life.) Rather this book introduces a set of mathematical tools and physical ideas and then shows how they can be applied to a diverse set of real problems in biology and medicine. As the author is a physicist, many of his chosen applications and examples come from current research areas in biological physics: superresolution microscopy (Chapter 6), which was recognized with a Nobel Prize in 2014, is just one example. But still the applications cover a broad range of topics, from bacterial mutations, chemostats and drug testing to superresolution microscopy, genetic oscillators and transcriptional bursting.

The first half of the book focuses on random processes in biology. It introduces basic concepts of probability and statistics such as continuous and discrete probability distributions, Poisson processes, conditional probability, Bayes Theorem, maximum likelihood, etc. It then uses these tools to construct models for some of the applications mentioned above (mutations, superresolution, bursting, etc.). Probabilistic and statistical tools are of high importance these days as scientists increasingly use photon-counting or single molecule techniques to study processes inside individual living cells.

The second half of the book mostly focuses on regulatory models and mechanisms. The basic tools are such ideas as birth-death processes, phase portraits, regulatory networks, genetic switches and oscillators, feedback and nonlinearity. The book applies these ideas to (for example) the lac system, transcription, positive and negative regulation (trp operon), circadian oscillators, etc.

Each chapter offers a handful of homework problems. Many of them are quite interesting and go beyond the simple plug & chug. Some problems are explicitly biological while others are not. The problems span the full range from fairly conceptual or intuitive to moderately mathematical, to rather complex, perhaps even requiring some programming skill in Matlab or equivalent.

Overall I recommend the book highly. It does a great job of developing some fundamentally important mathematical and physical ideas with high precision and clarity and then applying them to a nice array of important (often classic) biological problems. It is probably best suited for the advanced undergraduate physical science major: Nelson keeps the biology jargon to a minimum and assumes very little prior biology knowledge beyond (say) AP Biology ... but he does not hesitate to use any/all mathematical tools needed. For the reader to benefit from this book, it is much more important to have good facility with basic calculus than to have prior exposure to biology beyond high school. Nelson's writing style is careful but informal; undergraduates with math skills should find the book very readable. More advanced readers who already have a command of the math and physics content will still find the book interesting because of the diversity of biological applications that it covers.

The book is designed as a textbook, and thus can serve as the basis for undergrad and mezzanine undergrad/grad-level courses. The writing style is clear and accessible, and the examples and homework problems have been carefully designed and presented to enable students to become proficient in key concepts and principles at the interface of physics and molecular biology. The topics covered include viral dynamics, gene regulation, stochastic gene expression, and genetic switches and oscillators. Students and professors alike will love this book.

Excellent new book for undergrads and grad students alike.

This book is a fantastic tool for students at the advanced undergraduate to graduate level. The section on randomness in biology is very clearly written with excellent problems and examples. The sections on the Luria-Delbruck experiment are particularly well-laid-out. Poisson Processes (Ch 7) was a favorite of my students and serves as the best example, in my opinion, of how to teach this material. Later chapters on visual processing are equally well-written. Overall, a wonderful book through and through.

Brent D. Wolfe, PhD, is assistant professor in the department of hospitality, tourism, and family and consumer sciences at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

Wolfe has presented his research on facilitation and debriefing at numerous international and national conferences and has authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters. In 2006, he was awarded the Junior Faculty Outstanding Teaching Award from the University of Southern Mississippi.

As a certified therapeutic recreation specialist, Wolfe works as a consultant for the Luckday Citizenship Scholars Program, developing and testing new team-building techniques and practicing his group-development and relationship-building skills.

Wolfe is a member of the National Therapeutic Recreation Society where he currently serves as president. He was also a member of the Association for Challenge Course Technology and the Association for Outdoor Recreation and Education.

In his free time, Wolfe enjoys learning about the latest in digital technologies. He also enjoys playing disc golf and hide-and-seek with his two-year-old daughter. He resides in Statesboro with his wife, Rebecca, and their daughter, Austyn Grace.

Colbey Penton Sparkman has more than 10 years of experience working with young adults as a campus minister and church-based minister. Previously, Sparkman served as minister to collegiates at First Baptist Church in Hattiesburg and as a campus minister at Florida State University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Penton Sparkman currently works as a leadership development consultant and communications specialist for National Collegiate Ministry. She received her master of divinity degree in 2000 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Penton Sparkman, her husband, Larry, and three young daughters live in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In her leisure time she enjoys graphic design, triathlon training, and vegetable gardening.

An Office Library Must-Have!

As a professor of communication and an instructor of freshman level orientation courses, I find this book to be quite helpful in my classes. It expands upon many of the exercises we have done for years, but with a fresh spin and focus on the thought process of our current college aged students. I use the book primarily for a class entitled, Critical Inquiry ([...]), and have found the exercises helpful in not only drawing students into the group, but also in allowing the students to maintain their individuality (which seems to be of great concern among a large percentage of my students). Students embrace the familiarity of their technology and this book allows instructors to capitalize on that in a way that is meaningful to the group and to the educational process.

I would recommend it to anyone that is starting their higher education teaching career (whether it be in a university, college, or church setting) or to anyone that is looking for great team-building activities for that age group. I have shared this book with many of my colleagues and student peer mentors and all agree that it is a book that should be in everyone's office library.

Thumbs Up to Team-Building Activities for the Digital Age

In dozens of inventive ways, the authors use the latest technology tools to help groups build community and connectedness. From photo activities like "A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words" that confront stereotypes to texting activities like "Trailing the Text" and "Trivia Text" that promote teamwork and creativity, the book encourages group members to explore their identities and values and how they can better relate to one another. I found the guide a cinch to pick up and use quickly--a must when dealing with fast-paced, easily-distracted young adults--and liked that there were clear instructions, necessary equipment and conversation starters for every activity. Young people like that the book's activities give them a "legitimate" reason to use their cell phones, digital cameras and social networking sites. No one in this book is yelling at them to "Get off Facebook and Twitter!" or "Stop texting!"--instead, the authors embrace these platforms to help the young people of the digital age build face-to-face relationships.

An excellent lesson on the pleasure of giving

I really enjoyed reading this book to my daughter Emily,age 3. It is a wonderful story about a boy who had five new pennies and spent them buying things for others. In such a greedy world we need to instill the power of giving to our children. The story is well written and the illustrations are enticing.

Easy to read--and memorize!

My 2 1/2-year-old loves this book and was soon "reading" it back to me! Its simple rhymes relate a story of generosity and thoughtfulness. We read it every day for weeks, and return to it frequently after 4 months. Paperback version is not sturdy, though--pages fell out after repeated reading.

What a wonderful story to read with your child! A great lesson in sharing and basic mathmatics. Plus, the illustrations are wonderful 3-D paper cutouts! This book is a special and rare treat for 3,4 and 5 year olds. I highly recommend it.

Great story teaching life changing principles

Teaching fables, like this book, use a story to teach a lesson. Most that I've read (and I love to read them) have a thin plot carried by rich teaching points. A few have a decent story, but the teaching isn't particularly special or original. The rarest find is a clever story with deep, rich ideas.

This book is one of the rare finds--a great story (subtle, fast-paced, and realistic) with great ideas behind it (easy to understand and potentially life changing).

Note: I'm an author of fables (releasing my second this year) and have been a personal coach around life purpose for 12 years, so I have high standards. This is a phenomenal book for anyone looking to get clarity on which path to pursue.

The main character is college-aged, so it's easiest for similar-aged readers to relate and apply. But the ideas are rich enough that any age could have a breakthrough in the area of personal passions and purpose.

Great parental guide too!

As parents, we want what is best for our children. Often, we push hard for them to do more, be more. However, have you ever stopped to think that you may be pushing the wrong way? More than anything I would love for my children to find their path that is intended for them and for them to reach their ultimate potential and to truly be happy!

I think this is a must read for high school students but I also believe that this can be a great guide for parents of children any age. After reading this book, I find myself paying more attention to my boys and what makes them tick!

Very easy, enjoyable read and will now be my standard gift I give to graduating Seniors!

I have started to find my way at 52

Great book that was easy to read and yet had some profound messages and learning. My initial thought was that this might be a book that would be more useful to 20 something's that are just starting out in life. After reading it I have realized that it is mandatory reading for every parent that lost their way someplace sometime.
I particularly liked the way the story was told and how the key concepts were summarized at the end. While the story implies that finding one's way is easy and exciting, in real life it could be difficult and exhausting without a good mentor.

NICK WILKINSON is Professor at Richmond the American International University in London and has taught economics and finance in various international institutions in the UK and USA. He has authored two books, 'Managerial Economics: A Problem-Solving Approach', published by Cambridge University Press (2005), and 'An Introduction to Behavioral Economics', published by Palgrave Macmillan (2007), now in its second edition. His research interests lie in that field, particularly in the implications of evolutionary biology and neuroscience for behavioral economics.

MATTHIAS KLAES is Professor and Dean of the School of Business at the University of Dundee, UK, as well as Convenor of the Scottish Centre for Economic Methodology (SCEME). Having studied at universities in Germany, Holland, France, Scotland, and England, he has got a background in engineering, economics and management studies, as well as science studies. He has served as Managing Editor of the Journal for Economic Methodology, and has acted as adviser to both private and public sector bodies. Before joining Dundee he was Professor of Commerce at Keele University, and Reader in Economics at the University of Stirling. He publishes widely in new institutional and behavioral economics, and economic and management methodology.

Poorly written and somewhat incoherent

This book is incredibly unclear and in need of a good editor. I adopted this book for an upper level undergraduate course in behavioral economics and regretted doing so almost immediately when the school year started. The authors frequently use advanced economic terms without explaining what they mean and present the material in a fairly incoherent fashion. Within the first week, several students approached me with concerns about whether they'd be able to make it in the course since the first ten pages of the book were so confusing. Sadly, the rest of the book doesn't get much better.

The next time I teach the course, I'll use the textbook "Behavioral Economics" by Edward Cartwright (Behavioral Economics (Routledge Advanced Texts in Economics and Finance)). It's written much more clearly and the material's presentation is very coherent (I have received no compensation from nor have any relationship with Cartwright or his publisher. I'm just writing this in the hope that it keeps other professors from making the same mistake I did).

What initially drew me to Wilkinson and Klaes' book is that it covers a wide swath of behavioral economics and provides a number of great real world examples that help students see how behavioral economics matters for real world decision making. In the future, I'll adopt Cartwright's book and supplement it on my own with news items and real world studies.

An Important--but Perhaps Unnecessarily Limited--Introduction to Behavioral Economics

Wilkinson and Klaes, An Introduction to Behavioral Economics (2nd Edition) is an important introduction to the field, but one that is limited in ways that might mislead many readers. Endorsed by some of the leading figures in behavioral economics, the book cites a vast literature and is the best means of obtaining a summary of most of that material. It is candid about the importance it assigns to evolutionary psychology, evolutionary biology and behavioral game theory, so that those who are skeptical of the importance it gives to those approaches are provided with fair warning. At the same time, there are several serious omisions. To begin with, it virtually ignores the important work of Truman Bewley, a general equilibrium theorist, more recently also turned to interviewing decision makers concerning the reasons underlying their decisions (Why Wages Don't Fall During a Recession, Harvard University Press, 1999). The principal exposition of Bewley's work is not cited in the full presentation nor in the summarized chapters in two volumes that are in fact listed in the lengthy bibliography. Yet this approach to behavioral economics may be one that could serve as an important supplement to deservedly influential experimental economics. Some important contributions of other authors who also are cited such as Peter Diamond and John Conlisk, also are omitted for reasons it is difficult to understand. Moreover, with only a single exception, none of the work of those who might be characterized as more institutionally-oriented, for the most part, second level contributors are considered (see Morris Altman's Handbook of Contemporary Behavioral Economics), although some of their work might well be taken into account by those attempting to get a handle on what is involved in behavioral economics. Finally, although the text does discuss several matters that might be included in behavioral macroeconomics, it does not explicitly acknowledge the lack of much serious work in that area (nor even the popular work of several major economists), nor, of course, the more recent collection of analyses edited by Ian MacDonald.

In short, Wilkinson and Klaes' An Introduction to Behavioral Economics presents an admirable summary of an extraordinary amount of material, but provides the reader with a limited view of the content and potential of the field.

About the Author
Kristine Forney has been a member of the Music History/Musicology faculty at California State University, Long Beach, since 1978. She specializes in Renaissance music, is a performer and teacher of historical instruments, and is the author of numerous scholarly articles exploring diverse facets of Renaissance musical life and practices. She has taught music appreciation to thousands of undergraduate students, and has been an author of The Enjoyment of Music since 1988.

Andrew Dell'Antonio is Distinguished Teaching Professor of Music at the University of Texas at Austin. Winner of the University of Texas Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award, he teaches courses in musical historiography, feminist/queer theory, and cultural studies. Dell'Antonio is a specialist in musical repertories of early modern Europe, and his recent work investigates topics as diverse as postmodern modes of hearing and changing listening practices in the early Italian Baroque.

The late Joseph Machlis was professor of music at Queens College of the City University of New York. Among his many publications are Introduction to Contemporary Music (Norton) and singing translations for many operas.

You need to purchase a separate electronic access key.

While the book is handy, you need the electronic access to complete the college class. You will find that after renting the book and having to purchase the online access key, it would have been cheaper to buy a new book outright.

It was in good condition, and an easy read. However, if you need it for school, buy it new because you will most likely need the access code that comes with it, and it only works if it is new, and the code is like $45 if you bought it used.

The Enjoyment of Music

This is an updated version of a music textbook that has been a standard for decades. I do use this volume in my Music History classes at the University. I find it to be excellent for the beginning music student, and I encourage Music professors to consider this text for their courses.

R.W. DAVIES is Emeritus Professor in the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham.
