Sincere, Endearing, Touches the Heart

I wish I bought this book at the beginning of my breast cancer journey last year. So glad I at least have it now. Absolutely endearing. Full of stories from every perspective from family to friends and beyond. I have highlighted all of my favorite paragraphs and now my book is darn near all yellow highlighted pages!!! Makes a wonderful gift.

Lentin Joseph

Lentin Joseph is an electronics engineer, robotics enthusiast, machine vision expert, embedded programmer, and the founder and CEO of Qbotics Labs (http://www.qboticslabs.com) in India. He got his bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering at the Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Kerala. In his final year engineering project, he created a social robot, which can interact with people. The project was a huge success and got mentioned in visual and print media. The main feature of this robot was that it could communicate with people and reply intelligently. It also has some image-processing capabilities, such as face, motion, and color detection. The entire project was implemented using the Python programming language. His interest in robotics, image processing, and Python began this project. After graduation, he worked at a start-up company based on robotics and image processing for 3 years. In the meantime, he learned famous robotic software platforms―such as Robot Operating system (ROS), V-REP, and Actin (a robotic simulation tool)―and image processing libraries, such as OpenCV, OpenNI, and PCL. He also knows about robot 3D designing, embedded programming on Arduino, and Stellaris Launchpad. After 3 years of work experience, he started a new company called Qbotics Labs, which is mainly focused on research to build great products in domains such as wearable technology, robotics, machine vision, green technology, and online education. He maintains a personal website (http://www.lentinjoseph.com) and a technology blog called technolabsz (http://www.technolabsz.com). He publishes his works on his tech blog. He was a speaker at PyCon2013 India, and he spoke on the topic of learning robotics using Python.

Misleading title, but excellent robotics book

The title of this book is misleading. Yes, there is python in the book and the examples are written in python, but the book is really about how to take existing technology and build an advanced robot at a price most hobbyists could probably afford. Most of us build a line follower, a light avoider, a robot that bounces off walls and then randomly turns etc, but moving to that next step of building a robot that knows where it is and can find its way back (SLAM algorithm) is something else most builders never get to since it is a hard nut to crack. He gives a blue print for an advanced robot which can be built for well under a $1000 and uses ROS (robot operating system), PCL, a Kinect, IMU, ultrasonic sensor ARM processor etc.

He takes all the pieces that are out there and shows you how to integrate them all into an advanced robot. It wasn't what I expected from the book but I was pleasantly surprised since it was exactly what I need to get myself to that advanced robot I really want to build.

Warning, that the directions may be out of date (it is predicated on an older version of ROS) and you will need to use the internet and/or other resources to do all of the things he documents. It is still worth every penny

This book differs from the previous books of ROS from PACKT in such a way that it explain to build an autonomous robot from scratch and teach how to apply ROS to it. It will be useful if we are planning to learn ROS and build a robot along with it

This is one of the best books for learning robotics practically. The highlight of this book is that it deals with all the realms of robotics, mechanical CAD design, electronics circuit design, embedded firmware development, high level image and speech processing, autonomous navigation using AI techniques ,and much more. It also gives an intro to using ROS for a beginner. a MUST READ BOOK.

About the Author
Joichi "Joi" Ito has been recognized for his work as an activist, entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and advocate of emergent democracy, privacy, and Internet freedom. As director of the MIT Media Lab, he is currently exploring how radical new approaches to science and technology can transform society in substantial and positive ways. Ito has served as both board chair and CEO of Creative Commons, and sits on the boards of Sony Corporation, Knight Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, The New York Times Company, and The Mozilla Foundation. Ito's honors include TIME magazine's "Cyber-Elite" listing in 1997 (at age 31) and selection as one of the "Global Leaders for Tomorrow" by the World Economic Forum (2001). In 2008, BusinessWeek named him one of the "25 Most Influential People on the Web." In 2011, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Oxford Internet Institute. In 2013, he received an honorary D.Litt from The New School in New York City, and in 2015 an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Tufts University. In 2014, he was inducted into the SXSW Interactive Hall of Fame; also in 2014, he was one of the recipients of the Golden Plate award from the Academy of Achievement.
Jeff Howe is the program coordinator for Media Innovation at Northeastern, and an assistant professor at Northeastern University. A longtime contributing editor at Wired magazine, he coined the term crowdsourcing in a 2006 article for that magazine. In 2008 he published a book with Random House that looked more deeply at the phenomenon of massive online collaboration. Called Crowdsourcing: How the Power of the Crowd is Driving the Future of Business, it has been translated into ten languages. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University during the 2009-2010 academic year, and is currently a visiting scholar at the MIT Media Lab. He has written for the Washington Post, Newyorker.com, The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, and many other publications. He currently lives in Cambridge with his wife and two children.

All of Joi's intelligence and guidance about our "learn, unlearn and relearn" future wrapped up in one book. Guidance from Joi Ito for tech startups and companies employing tech (all of them now) has proven invaluable for the last two decades. This book distills the many lectures, Facebook live chats, blog entries and other wisdom from this man who Business Week once said was one of the 25 most influential people on the Web. Highly recommended.

This book is a MUST READ for anyone who needs to think about innovation and the rapid pace of change leading to an uncertain future. Authors Joi Ito, Director of MIT's iconic Media Lab ,and Jeff Howe, a visiting scholar at the Media Lab, have opened a window into the principles that drive innovation and research at the Lab. The structure of the book introduces each of the 9 principles and how they impact the setting of research priorities. The principles are illustrated and elucidated through vignettes that tell how researchers at MIT and beyond have employed the antidisciplinary ethos of the Lab to forge teams of women and men from a wide and disparate set of fields of study and expertise.

I have had some personal interactions with scholars at the Media Lab, so I have had the privilege of seeing these principles in operation on the research bench and in prototypes. Several years ago, I was invited to be an outside set of eyes and ears and voice at the weekly luncheons that were held by the City Science initiative within the Media Lab. The level of creativity and cross-disciplinary innovation (Joi Ito prefers the terms "antidisciplinary") is without equal.

Ito and Howe make the point that much of future innovation will take place in the interstitial spaces - in the white space - between recognized academic disciplines. This book offers a robust examination of how we will get to an era when the walls that keep disciples isolated from each other have dissolved. The anticipated changes have tremendous implications for developments in the fields of education, technology, medicine and artificial intelligence.

The points highlighted in this book are all good points, but they are rather easy-to-understand ideas that can be adequately articulated in a blog article. If you are familiar with this type of concepts, there is not a lot of depth here. The key points are: embrace uncertainty, collaborative over individual efforts, adaptability over rigidity, etc.
