About the Author
Michael P. O'Donnell, Ph.D., M.B.A., M.P.H. is founder, editor-in-chief and president of the American Journal of Health Promotion, Inc., the first scientific journal to address the health promotion field. As editor-in-chief, Dr. O'Donnell has completed composite editorial reviews of over 1,400 manuscripts. As President, he has organized 10 national conferences. Dr. O'Donnell is also founder and president of the Health Promotion Research Foundation, and research director of the Health Enhancement Research Organization (HERO). Prior to starting the journal, Dr. O'Donnell worked in hospital management for seven years, and in management consulting for four years. He has served ont he faculty of five universities and is currenlty an adjunct professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan.

A Must for Worksite Practitioners

Almost every week I open this book looking for information, ideas or just trying to get a better feel for a worksite programming model or concept. The three editions of this book have helped our field move forward by giving academics and practitioners an excellent one book source for what is best practices in worksite health promotion.

If you are a seasoned health promotion professional you already have this book and like me use it weekly. If you are new in the field and did not use this book in your undergraduate or graduate studies - you need to buy it for it will become a true resource for ensuring you become a better worksite programmer.

When you look at the contributing editors of this book you realize the expertise and experience you will be tapping into - and it's worth every penny you have to spend. This past week I was working on moving people away from the "Biggest Loser" concept in weight loss and immediately went to several chapters that gave me a starting point for designing a "behavior changed" focused weight management program. As a worksite program manager for almost 30 years it is the design and delivery of programming that helps initiate and support individual behavior change that is my constant challenge. O'Donnell's book is one of the books I keep directly over my computer - almost eye level where I can easily get at it without missing a step.

I find this book ok. Not the best workplace health promotion book I've ever purchased. But this is only my personal opinion. Deliver very fast however.

About the Author

Richard Rawlings, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, developed a passion for automobiles from an early age, attending professional car shows with his dad and buying and selling multiple vehicles in his teens. A veteran of transcontinental road rallies, he has won the Gumball 3000 and the Bullrun twice, and he broke a world record in the Cannonball Run that had stood for twenty-five years. He is the owner of the world-renowned hot rod shop Gas Monkey Garage and the star of Discovery's hit series Fast N' Loud.

MARK DAGOSTINO is a New York Times bestselling coauthor and a former senior writer at People magazine. You don't have to love cars, the show or even Richard to LOVE this book!

The first time I saw Fast N Loud I was in a small restaurant in the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the bar was a large group of fisherman (at least 20) gathered around a small TV. One man was loudly translating every word Richard and Aaron spoke into Spanish and the group watching was laughing and hanging on to every word. I had to find out what show this was and who these guys on tv were. A couple of months later I was in the same bar, must have been a Monday, cause all the guys were gathered around the TV watching/translating Fast N Loud again. Fast forward to now, and I can see why Richard has such a great following and family of fans all over the world.
Everyone loves to see a good before and after, the show does that very well. But behind the finished build, we all know there's a lot of work that goes unseen (only so much you can show in an hour). A lot of people think Richard was made in a day, like the builds on the show, but this book dives deep into the beginning of a dream, all the hard work it took just to step away and pursue the dream, the people who believed in his dream, enough to jump whole heartedly into it, and eventually how 11 years later he became an overnight success. It's a really inspiring story with lessons that can apply to anyone, you don't have to love cars, the show or even Richard. Give it a read and you might be inspired to keep going, keep hustling and keep dreaming.
I've had the pleasure of working with Richard and Gas Monkey Garage on a couple of video projects through a client and vendor of theirs. I'm impressed by their humility, realness and overall work ethic. I thought I knew the whole story, but this book filled in the blanks. I'm excited to see how the next chapters unfold.

Fast, Loud, and Arrogant

As a huge fan of the show Fast and Loud, I have always liked Richard Rawlings. His personality is so big, as is his motivation and drive. My favorite part was about his early life before his TV show. I think the beginning of the book was better than the end. It was excellent to read about how he became successful over the years and the story of his relationship with his wife. It was truly a story of a self made man, who is charming, motivated and who had a little luck. The last part of the book he's giving advice on how to flip cars, and he kind of came off as bragging about how great he is. I wish he could have been a little more humble. He has an excellent success story, but he ended up sounded a little more self absorbed than I had expected. I did enjoy the peek into his early life/career, and learning more about Aaron. But, the book could have wrapped up before he started trying to train the amateur car flipper to be like him.

Must read book for writers this is why.

Ray Bradbury is my favorite author. He is a true American treasure that not enough people know about. Most people only know him from Fahrenheit 451: A Novel, but there is so much more to read in Ray Bradbury's world. Try reading The Illustrated Man, Something Wicked This Way Comes, The Martian Chronicles, I Sing the Body Electric: And Other Stories, , Dandelion Wine (Grand Master Editions), and one of my favorites, Bradbury Stories: 100 of His Most Celebrated Tales.

If you ever need to be inspired in your writing, read this book. He will draw the passion of writing out of you, remind you why we do what we do, and slowly build you a blueprint on how to do it daily. I highly commend this book for any writer and any level.

PLOT is no more than footprints left in the snow.

The essays in this book are, and Ray Bradbury admits this, written from the perspective of a person who MUST write: "I have learned, on my journeys, that if I let a day go by without writing, I grow uneasy."

All eleven essays were previously published, over the 30 years prior to the collection's original 1994 publication. There is a little bit of repetition in the stories because of that, but not enough to be annoying.

The essays are, for the most part, rah-rah, get your imagination out cheerleading. Bradbury writes in direct sentences, with lots of energy and plenty of exclamation points. An important lesson is to take your experiences, especially your fears, and use them in your creations. He gives many examples of how this worked in his own writing. I found the most interesting tip in the final essay (the last chapter is poetry): "Remember: PLOT is no more than footprints left in the snow AFTER your characters have run by on their way to incredible destinations. PLOT is observed after the fact rather than before. It cannot precede action. It is the chart that remains when a action is through."

I think plot and action and characters are more of a balancing act, but I understand what he's saying and it's something to keep in mind. I have to admit, though, that I thought "The Martian Chronicles" could have used a lot more PLOT.

Overall, I liked Stephen King's On Writing: 10th Anniversary Edition: A Memoir of the Craft a bit better, but the first part of King's book is a biography which, though interesting, isn't about writing. For me, "Zen in the Art of Writing" is 3.6 stars rounded up to 4.

The Workings Of A Master

Bradbury has always been a mystery to me--his ability to write so well so fast while entertaining and making us think--and I've wanted to know more about his approach to writing. It's here, and it's different, and it's whipped my head around to see the craft in a different light. I'm positive I read this a long time ago and thought, Oh everything in it is somewhere buried in my mind. Perhaps I have, but I was different then and didn't realize what a gem of a book it is. There are no strict formulas in this book, which I appreciate, but many lights in the dark that help lead the way. Anyone with a curiosity about Bradbury's thinking or the craft of writing should find this as enjoyable as I did.

In The Miraculous Child, Alvin Aleksi Currier ably retells a Christmas folktale from old Russia. With colorful and stylistically appropriate illustrations by Nadezda Glazunova, The Miraculous Child is a timeless tale of a poor Russian family in a humble log home where a woodcutter, his mother, wife and children have almost nothing to eat, very little to trade or sell, and nothing for the Christmas Feast. The woodcutter encounters a little boy out in a field, shivering and cold. When he brings the lad into his home to share what little poor fare the family has, they discover that it's an angel they have invited in from the cold and a Christmas Feast is held that will never be forgotten. Very highly recommended for the Christmas and folktale collections at grade schools and in community library collections. --Amazon

About the Author
After many years as a Presbyterian clergyman, in 1975 Alexsi founded St. Herman's Hermitage and began a spiritual journey which concluded in his finding a home in the Orthodox Church. In addition to his work as an artist and writer, he travels widely and organizes pilgrimages in Eastern Europe for others to experience Orthodoxy from the inside out.

A treasure to keep

I own most of Alvin Aleksi Currier's children's books and they are all excellent. However this book is my favorite. I love how the author managed to put the beautiful heart-warming story into equally beautiful word, poetry-like. It is written at just the right level of understanding for a child without dumbing it down (like other children book authors do). The illustrations are beautiful and complement the story perfectly. My daughter and I read this many times with the same pleasure. A treasure to keep!

Wonderful Christmas book/gift

I have purchased several of Alvin Aleksi Currier's children's books and all have been excellent. They all are of a spiritual nature, teaching children as well as adults important values in life, in this case being kind to a person in need. The setting is in old world Russia but the story can be universal and is found in other cultures' literature as well. The illustrations are beautiful and are a window into the Russian culture of an earlier age

Same Tale, Different Culture

This is a different version of an old folktale. We enjoyed it, though, and the illustrations are nice. There are strong references to God, so if you are offended by that, skip this book. It has a happy ending. :)
