Don't read the book first!

If you plan on both playing the game, and reading the book. I'd strongly recommend playing the game first, before reading the book.

The reason for this is that the character you play in the game, cannot possibly know the full extent of the people and events that happen in the book.

By the reading the book first, you will interact with characters in the game with an amount of prejudice and familiarity that you shouldn't have, because your character doesn't know these people and has no knowledge of their past, and part of the game is interacting with them and coming up with your own decisions on how to deal with them.

Great SF

I have read SF for many years but never anything like this. Wow!

First, I like the entire concept of Mass Effect Andromeda (no matter how frustrating some of the game mechanics are) that of exploration (without having a bloodbath every time Shepherd went somewhere) with a positive outlook. Of course in the MA universe, we know no matter the choice taken at the end of MA3, the Milky Way would have to have centuries to recover from the reapers.

I don't recall many stories of a centuries' long cryogenic series of arks except for a vague memory of an Andre Norton story way back in the 1960's.

Humanity and alien allies, probably privately funded (who are the benefactors?), over 100,000 of them, have to overcome the challenges of a new galaxy as well as find new ways to work together. Who knew that a SF story could so thoroughly explore the viewpoints and motivations of bureaucrats, security, engineers and technicians trying to survive the Scourge.

But ever more this book shows that government (of the Nexus) lacked the foresight to be flexible and inclusive.
So the Andromeda Initiative has to make hard choices. Are there any villains here? Who is "right" and who is really following the Mission? As a history professor I am delighted with this exploration of not just outer space but inner space.

I think this book is an excellent complement to the game and I look forward to the next book

Meanwhile, if I can just find my way out of the Kett fortress on Voeld...any suggestions would be appreciated.

Unfortunately, not a great tie-in novel

I'm a big fan of the Drew Karpyshyn Mass Effect (and Star Wars) novels, and I've played Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3 multiple times each. I'm 75% through ME: Andromeda. I can say, having played Andromeda, that this book didn't have much to work with. Unfortunately, it didn't bring anything new to the table to compensate either. I wasn't expecting the tautly-written action set pieces that are a Karpyshyn specialty, but I left with a new appreciation of Karpyshyn's character work and world-building -- or perhaps the built world that he got to play in and populate. Sadly, Andromeda may be the most boring part of the universe.

Positives:
- Solid, readable prose
- Good characterization and internal states

Negatives:
- Barely anything happens
- No reason to care about what little does occur
- This is a smaller scale story that, unfortunately, didn't need to be told

Now Redundant

A good book of Gay art in a small/medium page format. Artists featured use a very wide range of styles and materials. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 as virtually all of the artwork is reprinted in the book "Completely Stripped" so far as I could compare things. The exceptions are the cover and fromtpiece drawings. This printing is done on glossier paper and some of the prints have better shadow detail than in the new volume so having both is not totally redundant, though close.

I do not feel too bad as my version of this volume is in hard cover format and I got it used in new condition from an Amazon source at an excellent price.

This is an outstanding collection of erotica. Illustrations and drawings are really high quality and very erotic. Trust me, folks, these are not "cartoons" - but very stimulating and suggestive drawings of stylized "men" (no, these guys don't really exist....). Most people think that "explicit" equals "erotic". Wrong. Erotic is evoked through the imagination, and these artists have LOTS of imagination!

About the Author

Cindy Stanfield earned her Ph.D in physiology at the University of California at Davis. She teaches human physiology lecture and laboratory courses and neuroscience at the University of South Alabama (USA), and researches sensory modulation. She received the College of Allied Health Professions Excellence in Service Award in 2003 and the University of South Alabama Excellence in Teaching Awards in 2004. She also serves as the advisor for the health pre-professionals at USA. She is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the American Pain Society, and the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions.

Very laggy. I am unable to scroll down or across a page in many cases when zoomed in. It reloads back to the default position. Need to be zoomed in to read without strain on my laptop.

Roberta Bondi brings the rich tradition of the early Church fathers and mothers into the 20th century, and invites us to learn anew what it means to love. I particularly liked what she has to say about the concepts of "perfection" and "humility." She writes in a very engaging manner, making it easy to not only understand her writing, but sparking the desire to live it out. A wonderful read for Christians and those who may have been wounded by Christianity.

The title of this book, To Love as God Loves, challenges the reader to apply God's love in our approach to life. Bondi through select passage of Christian literature challenges us to see how "Godly love" should be striven for in His kingdom. In order to achieve that goal we must look at the commonality of our existence as men and women in God's world and be aware of what human frailties interfere with our ability to love. We must first come to fundamentally understand what is God's love and what is God's plan to use love as the foundational principal and keystone in upon which to build our life. Roberta C. Bondi effectively uses early Christian literature to present situational circumstances that can be used as metaphors of understanding God's love in our contemporary world.
Since love can assume so many different forms and be at many times be conceptual and the relationship of love to man can be situational to many different applications. Bondi's use of many different illustration' from historic Christian authors, give substance and fullness to our understanding of what love is and can be. To love, as God would have us love is to be continually aware of our relationship to our fellow man and how that relationship plays to God's intention of what he requires of loving subjects. I believe that Roberta C. Bondi accomplished her goal. She logically sets forth defining her terms, presents us with a current (albeit historical view) look at love and what keeps man from loving as God intended. She further presents solid arguments as to how human nature is conflicted by our passions and then presents us with a solution of prayer so that we might reach that, "...partially covered over but still existing image of God" (p.79) that remains with in us. She then confronts us with her image of what is God's love which she sums up by saying, "God loves beyond your dreams, extravagantly, without limit" (p.101). To love, as God wants us to love is to look within each of us and to examine our most basic of motivations in relationship with our fellow man. The early Christian mystics had insights into our humanity that exposed our human frailties as well as our ability to discern God's intent in his kingdom. Through Bonds' reflections on the early writings of the church, we see that Christian love is and has been what God's kingdom is truly and simply all about.

and the abuse and exploitation of the VCA Legacy continues to continue, with no end in sight...

This book was complete and utter garbage - not that I (or anyone else) should be surprised at this point. It has all of the earmarks of a Neiderman book - cardboard character, lack of research (Neiderman just uses a bunch of stereotypes for Wiccans without showing any real understanding of the traditions of Wiccan and Paganism) and a contrived plot filled with slow parts and repetition.

This book is a lot like Daughter of Darkness - another one of Neiderman's god-awful books. Sage knows she is unique, but her parents aren't telling her anything. When the secret is revealed, I wasn't really surprised. I knew there was something weird/paranormal going on, and an author with skill and care for his or her craft could have pulled off a good storyline. But this is Neiderman we're talking about, so... skill and respect for the writing craft? Nope.

Neiderman may have been a decent author once, but his best days are long gone. It's obvious he is just churning these out for the money, without one single whit of care or respect for the V.C. Andrews Legacy. He writes all this garbage under her name, because he knows that if he published this story under his own name, it would sell nowhere near as well.

The reveal is something akin to Daughter of Darkness. Apparently, having Wiccan powers imbues one with immortality. (what?) and Neiderman leans heavily upon bad research and stereotypes (Wiccan is a fairly modern term) and he uses pentagrams and pentacles a lot. Wiccan and Paganism is far more than just these symbols, and the way he handled the religion in here shows how little research he did. Honestly, in the days of the Internet, there is NO excuse to not do research! I mean, hell, it doesn't even sound like Neiderman did the MINIMUM amount of research - this book literally reads like he got his "knowledge" of Wicca from Hollywood movies.

Insert a love interest for Sage - a boy with mysterious powers - and you have the usual teenage tripe that is akin to Twilight. Long gone are the characters that grew and matured through their stories (Cathy, Heaven, Dawn, Ruby) The recent stories always end with the main character still at teenage level, or little more than that, without any real character development whatsoever, but then, when the plot is stupid, should I really expect the characters to be any less stupid?

There is no real payoff by the ending of the book. Just like the other books Neiderman has written recently - Unwelcomed Child, the Diary series, Bittersweet Dreams, et. al., the story just putters out to an anticlimactic ending that makes one wonder what the point of the story even was. It is a godawful disgrace what is being done to a poor dead woman's good name by a man who has zero respect for her, or the craft of writing.

I'm going to pull up a quote from a science fiction short story that succinctly captures my feelings for Neiderman, the publishers, and the VCA family for allowing this to happen.

"Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant for you. Hate. I Love The Name Sage But Not Sure What This Has To Do With her Eyes

In Sage's Eyes we meet 16 year old Sage and adopted only child one who has an apparent gift of seeing and knowing things that will happen or have happened. She has dreams and feelings that her parents want her to ignore and forgot. Adopted at 8 months old she has many questions about her past and is confused by her parents constant guard and grilling questions over everything she says and does. It must be confusing for a young girl who has never had reason for them to be so untrusting. Odd gifts and trinkets, overbearing parents and interesting but elusive relatives have made Sage's life lonely and make her feel awkward let alone moving to a new school.

Life is complicated just when Sage starts stretching her teenage wings a new handsome student named Summer enters her life. Oddly enough he understands her gifts and even has a few of his own. In the end we learn a few things. Not many.. and they are oddly placed. It just seemed like a big build up and then a weird Wiccan story to explain her past and then nothing. I am not sure there is a part 2 and I will be OK with that.

As a huge VC Andrews fan of the past I found it interesting that books are still being put out after her death by ghost writers. I am fine with the families continued use of her name (they have every right) and the hiring of Andrew Neiderman to write in this well documented blueprint set forth by Andrews many many years ago however it takes more than a blueprint to write with the same passion for the characters that Andrews did. When you read a VC Andrews book you became family with the characters they were with you long after the sage was over and many of us re-read and re-read again our favorite VC Andrews books. Sage's Eyes may not be one of them

A big disappointment!

Sage’s Eyes by V.C. Andrews is set in Dorey, Massachusetts. Sage Healy has heard voices since she was child (she finds them comforting). Her adoptive parents (cold and clinical people) told her to ignore them. Sage also seems to know things about people and situations (and liked to blurt them out as a child). Her parents keep an eagle eye her like she is a bomb that will go off at any moment (or like she is a scientific experiment and they are taking notes). There is a new student at school named Summer Dante. He is intriguing and Sage is drawn to him. He seems to understand Sage’s gifts and he has a few of his own. He encourages her to use her gifts. However, his ideas of right and wrong are a little different than Sage’s. Sage is extremely tired of her parent’s secrets and wants to find out what they are hiding. Will Sage like the answers when she gets them? Will Sage use her gifts for good or will she be drawn to the dark side?

I was so excited when I received the opportunity to read Sage’s Eyes (my daughter loves V.C. Andrews books), and I was looking forward to reading a good paranormal novel. I was extremely let down by Sage’s Eyes. There is very little paranormal action in the book. It is a very blah (boring, dull) book. The book is confusing (things are not really explained until the very end of the book) and it is so hard to get into it (I never did). Most of the book is devoted to Sage’s thinking (especially about how cute Summer is). Her internal dialogue took up the majority of the book (and it was monotonous). I give Sage’s Eyes 2 out of 5 stars (I did not like it). The book had so much potential but none of it was realized. We are also left with a very unsatisfying ending (like there will be another book to pick up where this one left off).
